Severe computer failure, either the screen or graphics card. Can just about see the screen amongst lots of flashing colours and lines, so it needs checking out and I'll probably have to buy a new one :( On a positive note, I've managed to complete almost all the information on the Arlecdon Sherwens with relevant background source material.
Having had a year off from Family Tree research I'm now back trying to sort it and order it. In the meantime I've had quite a few emails from relatives here and abroad - amazing, interesting and helpful!
Bob, Carolyn and Peter in New Zealand wrote to say that they are descended from my grandad Sam's brothers - Peter, who went out to New Zealand, but also Ron, the son of Norman (Sam's brother) and they have new information about current generations of the family - thank you! I think Ron is a first cousin, once removed, and brothers Norman and Peter are my great uncles. Also Pete, it looks like we might be cousins, a few generations removed! I'm still not happy with the layout of the site and I'm working on a way to get descriptive information all in one place and documentation somewhere else, with clear links to that information. I think it might work out better that way. Cumbria Family History Society have added this site to their Links page and I've added a few more Links of my own, ones that I've found useful in my own researches. My two sisters are also Editors of this website and we're all doing different bits - Anne is deciphering two Wills, hand-written ones which are quite hard to read, and Christine has started to look at the Irish side of the family. I'm still adding people to the Surname list and need to add the Family Trees information that we already have, and I'm still trying to find out who my great great great grandad, Peter Sherwen, married. I have a first name Ann, with references to Ann or Nan on christening records, and she is buried with Peter at Arlecdon churchyard. So far I haven't been able to find a marriage record which might give me her maiden name. Kath Thanks John for your comment. The picture I have is the Chapel of St. Catherine's in Eskdale and it's from the fivenine website
Received a message from Ancestry and discovered that William Sherwen's first wife, Sarah Johnston (married in 1868) was living with someone else during the time she and William were married, but divorce, at the time, was not possible. Sarah lived with William Williamson, under her maiden name, in Liverpool, until her death in 1894, when William (Sherwen) then married Ann Stabler, making an honest woman of her! Cheers Ann!
Kath With all the bits of paper and notes I have, I thought it would be a good idea to do a 'Future Research' page, so have now added it, with all the names, bits of info, searches I've done that need to be looked into in more depth. There are so many people from the families I'm looking at - Sherwens, Nicholsons, Porters, Stables - new ones keep cropping up all over the place and I don't know whether they fit into the tree at all. Lots of work to do!
Kath Amazing how many families and how many different routes one can take in following a family down the ages. So far we have managed to return to the 1500s and have made links with so many different families, most notably the Nicholsons and the Stable families of the west lakes, around Gosforth, Seathwaite, Arlecdon and many places in between.
I started off with the Sherwens, found out we could go back and connect with royalty but what we would really like is more information about our Sherwen family. I know, for example, there was a Robert Sherwen living in Gosforth around 1550 - he is our forebear and the furthest back so far I can go, but I know nothing else about him, apart from his marriage to Elizabeth, his two daughters and a son. So far I've managed to put in a lot of names and dates but it's all a bit jumbled and I still have a lot more to put in. Once that's sorted, I hope to order the information better and put in some links, pictures, family trees... a lot of work to do! Kath |

AuthorMy family and I have become really interested in researching the Sherwen family tree, and would like to share the information we have, and hopefully make contact with others who are also interested in researching this or other connected families. Categories |
