1851 Census In 1851 Edward is still living in Newfields, in the township of Dunnerdale with Seathwaite but he is now a widower - Hannah, his wife, died in 1841. He is described as 'a farmer of 50 acres, with an additional 250 acres (not sure what this says - common land?) as well as an innkeeper. In addition to the 3 children listed in the 1841 Census, Edward has 2 more daughters - Hannah, 21, and Betty, 17 years. Hartley Stable, aged 21, is listed as a general servant in the household but he went on to marry Hannah. The family have another servant, Jonathan Jackson, who is described as a farm labourer.

His children John R (farm servant) and Betty (housekeeper) still live with him and another daughter Jane (dressmaker) who has not been present in other census years. The family have two servants, Joseph Yewdale and Mary Townson
