- lists John Sherwen, 1683, son of John Sherwen, 2buried in linen". His father paid a heft fine for using linen instead of the prescribed wool.
- Gosforth Gate, the residence of Nicholas and Janet cadye (both died of the plague in 1597). In 1628 John and Margaret Sherwen had cleared aaway the old tenement called Gosforth Gate and reared the mansion which still stands there today in picturesque decay and on which their names are easily read. (Now Gosforth Library) The owners of such a house must have been well-to-do.They had two sons, John and William; John was born and baptised on 13th March 1635 and succeeded to Gosforth Gate. He had 4 sons and two daughters. The sons all died young. (This John was buried in linen) The two girls were left co-heiresses: Margaret married Anthony Benn of Hensingham and Isobell married the Rector (Christopher Denton) on 21st jan 1696. They had five children: Thomas (died at college), Katherine married John Steele, Margratt married John Benson, both men of Egremont, and Elizabeth, who died unmarried.
(NB It says Christopher Denton and Mrs Isobell Sherwen. It also says that Isobell, the third daughter of Christopher denton and Isobell Sherwen), was 40 when she married Thomas Poole of Egremont, gentleman, brother to the childless Isaac and Sarah Poole of Gosforth Hall. 32 years later Thomas succeeded his brother and he and Isobell moved into Gosforth Hall.
