Hartley Stable (1830- 1909) Census Records
1841 – Ulverston Registration District, at Holin(?) House, in Seathwaite township: - Hartley, age 11, living with Ann Stable (Agriculture), aged 48, Jane, 15, William 13 years and David Stabler, (Agricultural labourer) aged 58. All born in Lancashire except for Ann.
1851 – Hartley, aged 21, living in Seathwaite, as a general servant to Edward Stable. Edward is a farmer of 50 acres, (Com?) 250 acres and an innkeeper at Newfield Inn. He was born at Birker. He is a widower. His unmarried children live with him – Sarah, born at Birker (22), Hannah, born at Birker (21), Betty, born Seathwaite (17), John, born Seathwaite (13) and Ann, born Seathwaite (10). Another servant, a farm labourer – Jonathan Jackson, aged 30,from Ulpha, lives with the family. They have a visitor on the day of the census: Jonathan Braithwaite, age 45, a waller, from Eskdale. (Hartley is later to marry Hannah)
1861 – Hartley is 32, head of the household and married to Hannah Stable, also 32. He is a farmer. They are living at Cragg(?) in Ennerdale Parish and have 4 children: - Ane, 6, Edward, 4, Wilson, 3 and William, 1 year old. There are two general servants - Joseph Park, from Egremont, aged 29, and Agnes Hodgson, from Farge(?) Lancashire, aged 17. Edward, Wilson and William were born at Ennerdale, but Ane was born at Seathwaite, like her parents.
1871 – can’t find.
1881 – Hartley now 51 and married to Mary (Quinn). His first wife Hannah has died. Hartley is an iron miner but he says that he was born at Ambleside, Westmorland. He is living at Tom Butt, Lamplugh with Mary, from Workington, their step-son, George Quinn, born Whitehaven, aged 12, their son John Stable, born Ennerdale, aged 10
1891 – Hartley is 57 (?), living at Bank End, St Bees, with Mary, his wife, and son Hartley J Stabler, born at Parton, aged 9. Hartley is an iron miner and says he was born at Newfield, Lancashire
1901 – Hartley, aged 71, living at March/Marsh St(?), St Bees. He is a widower and has son Hartley J., (born Moresby) aged 19, living with him and a servant, Eliz. Roberts, aged 67, from Whitehaven. Son Hartley is a Railway Platelayer. Can’t work out what Hartley senior’s employment is – looks like Carter Tarm, but is on his ‘own account’.
