Will of John Sherwen of Scallow 1885
This is the last will and testament of me John Sherwen of Scallow in the parish of Lamplugh in the county of Cumberland, Farmer. I appoint my nephew William Wood and my son-in-law James Kitchin, herein after called my trustees to be Executors and Trustees of this my Will. And I give to each of them my Executors who shall prove my Will and act in the execution of the Trusts herefo the sum of six pounds (£6) a piece. I order and direct my son Samuel Sherwen to pay my funeral expenses and for such purpose I give to him the money due to me from the Lamplugh Club and if that is insuffieient for the purpose then I also give to him the sum of money now in the hands of my nephew William Wood of Brownrigg (one of my Executors). I give unto my son Samuel Sherwen for his absolute use the whole of the furniture in my bedroom, namely, Bed and Bedding, one block, one pair of Chester drawers, one square card table, one other table, two armchairs, three other chairts, my Box, one night commode, one looking glass, one tender, one set of fire irons.
I give the following pecuniary legacies, that is to say, To my son Samuel Sherwen the sum of two hundred and seventy pounds (£270) in addition to the prior gift hereby made in his favour.
To my sister Eleanor Wood, the wife of Henry Wood the sum of fifteen pounds (£15) and to my grandson John Kitchin the sum of fifteen pounds (£15).
To my daughter Hannah Irving the sum of one hundred pounds (£100) for her own sole and separate use.
To my daughter Mary Ann Kitchin the sum of one hundred pounds (£100) for her own sole and separate use.
To the children of my deceased daughter Eleanor Latchem who shall attain the age of twenty one years the sum of one hundred pounds (£100) to be equally divided between them and if there shall be only such child who shall attain the age of twenty one years then the whole of the said sum of one hundred pounds to such one or only child.
To my grandson Peter Frank Sherwen son of my deceased son Peter Sherwen the sum of twenty pounds (£20) and to my granddaughter Eleanor Agnes Sherwen, daughter of my said son Peter Sherwen the sum of twenty pounds (£20) and to their mother being the widow of my deceased son Peter Sherwen the sum of twenty pounds (£20) for her separate use
And I direct that the aforesaid pecuniary legacies except those given to any person who at the time of my decease shall be under the age of twenty one years shall be paid at the end of six calendar months after my decease.
I give all my property, not hereby otherwise disposed of unto my trustee in trust to convert the farm into money and out of the proceeds to pay my debts and testamentary in expenses and the legacies bequeathed by my Will or any codicil thereto and shall stand ----------- thereof in trust for my son Samuel Sherwen and the widow of my deceased son Peter Sherwen if she shall be unmarried at my death in equal shares as tenants in common but if the widow of my deceased son Peter Sherwen shall be married at my death then upon trust for my son Samuel Sherwen for his own sole use and benefit absolutely. I revoke all former Wills and testamentary dispositions.
In witness whereof I have ____ to set my hand this eighteenth day of August one thousand eight hundred and eighty three (18/8/1883). Signed by the said John Sherwen and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us presnt together at the same time who at his request in his presence and in the presence of each other have herewith subscribed.

Proved at Carlisle on the 21st day of March 1885, by the oaths of William Wood, the nephew of the testator and James Kitchin, the executors named in the Will to whom administration was granted. The testator John Sherwen was late of Scallow in the parish of Lamplugh in the county of Cumberland, Farmer, and died on the 8th March 1885 at Scallow aforesaid. Gross value of effects - £734.0.0. Resworn June 1888 of the value of £934.0.0
