William Sherwen (1831-1915), born in King Street, Whitehaven and baptised on 27th November 1831 at St. Nicholas, Whitehaven. He appeared on the 1841 Census at King Street Whitehaven. On 30th March Census he was living at 11 Park Terrace, Stepney, Tower Hamlets with his married sister Eleanor and her husband John Richard Johnson, a clergyman. On 30th March 1851 he was an Undergraduate at Queen's College, Oxford, living at the same Stepney address. In the April Census of 1861 he was living at the Rectory House, Moorby, Lincs., with his married sister Eleanor and her husband.
In the April 1861 Census William had become a curate at Cold Brafield. He married Margaret Alethea Russell in 1863 in Bedford. From 1866 to 1871 he was a Curate of Dean and Mosser in Cumberland and from 1871 to 1915 he was the rector of Dean (after the death of his uncle Reverend Samuel Sherwen in 1870). On 5th April 1891 he was a clerk in Holy Orders, Rector of Dean, Justice of the Peace in the Rectory, Dean. He was the executor of the Will of his wife Margaret Alethea on 7th June 1909, London Registry.
On 2nd April 1911 he was a clerk in Holy Orders Established Church, Archdeacon at the Rectory, Dean. His death was registered in 1915 in Cockermouth, aged 83.

William Sherwen (1836-1896), born Arlecdon. Son of John Sherwen (1795-) and Eleanor Williamson (1804-1875) He married first Sarah Johnston at Lamplugh on 6th Feb 1868
William is described as 'married' in the 1871 Census: in fact, he was married at Lamplugh on 6th Feb 1868, to Sarah Johnston (Lamplugh Marriage Records JAC926) but Sarah was away on the day of the Census. Another Census from 1871 shows Sarah is at her parents home, High Leys, Lamplugh, with her parents, brothers John and James and sister Mary.
The marriage record (Lamplugh Marriage Register JAC926) states that Sarah's father, John, was a farmer, and her mother was Elizabeth. The witnesses were John Johnston and Mary Johnston. Both William and Sarah were of 'full age'. But in the 1881 Census William is described as single. William later married Ann Stabler, but not until 1894, so he may not have been free to marry until then.
William says he is married in 1871 Census but Sarah is recorded as being at her parents' house in that year. There is a marriage record of William and Sarah Johnston(1868 on 6th Feb: Lamplugh Marriage Register JAC926) There is a Census record for 1881 shows Sarah Sherwen living in Everton as head of household, age 38 (?), tallow chandler, born Lamplugh; with William Williamson, boarder , age 32, fire police constable, born in Whitehaven. In the 1891 Census, William is the head of the household, a fire police constable, born at Whitehaven and Sarah Sherwen is a cousin and housekeeper, age 50, born Lamplugh. There are no children.
The 1881 Census shows William, single, living at Starling Bank, Lamplugh with his widowed father John. Ann Stabler is described as a 'housekeeper' but there are two children, John Stabler, aged 2 years, and Hannah Stabler, aged 6 months. However, in the GRO Index of Births, it says that John Sherwen Stabler was born in the March quarter of 1879 in Whitehaven Registration District and Mary Ann Sherwen Stabler was born in the March quarter 1882 (Hannah in the census) and Peter Sherwen Stabler was born in the September quarter of 1889, all in the Whitehaven registry District.
Between the Census of 1881 and 1891 there were dramatic changes. John Sherwen, William's father, died in 1885 and left a Will in which William is not mentioned, even though he was the only child of John still remaining in the family home. In addition John instructed the farm be sold - whether William was still resident is not known. By the 1891 Census William and Ann have moved to Low Asby and William has employment as a railway labourer - no longer a farmer's son.
In the 1891 Census Ann Stabler's child John is now referred to as John Sherwen, even though Ann herself is still listed as servant/housekeeper.. Hannah Stabler, who would have been 10 is not mentioned in the Census, but there are several new Sherwen children - Mary Ann, William, Nellie, Norman and Peter, all born at Arlecdon, and all, presumably the children of Ann Stabler and William Sherwen.
On May 22nd 1894, Sarah Sherwen, William's wife, died in Liverpool. Probate, on 4th June in Liverpool, for Sarah Sherwen's will was given to William Williamson, fire policeman. Effects £340.13s.9d.
Ann Stabler and William were married two months after Sarah's death.William was described as a widower.
Marriage Certificate: Ann Stabler and William Sherwen, married in the Parish Church of Arlecdon, on 4th August 1894 - Ann is 39 years old, a spinster and domestic servant, father Hartley Stabler, a miner.) NB Ann and Hartley are called Stabler but Stable is used everywhere else..
When his father died in 1885, William's circumstances changed. John's will excluded him and Ann Stabler, and the children from the relationship. Bequests were made to all of John's other children, and grandchildren, and John specifically stated in the Will that the farm was to be sold. The 1891 Census has William living at Low Asby, Arlecdon, employed as a 'railway labourer'. Ann Stabler, the housekeeper, is still with him and there are several more children:
John Sherwen (1879, aged 12) same date of birth as John Stabler (1881 census)
Mary Ann (Hannah) Sherwen (1882, aged 9)
William Sherwen (1884, aged 7)
Nellie (or Eleanor) Sherwen (1885, aged 6)
Norman Sherwen (1888, aged 3)
Peter Sherwen (1890, aged 1 year)
In 1894 William married Ann Stabler. They were married in the parish church at Arlecdon on August 4th 1894. On the marriage certificate William is 52 years old and described as a 'widower'. He gives his occupation as a labourer. Ann is 39 years old, a 'domestic servant'. Ann's father is named as Hartley Stabler, a miner. There were two witnesses Jonathan and Elizabeth Wood. (Note - William Wood was an executor of John Sherwen's estate and is described as John's nephew. N.B. The 1891 Census says William, aged 50, (who lives at Low Asby with Ann Stabler) is married. It is probable that Sarah, his first wife, died sometime between 1891 and William's second marriage, in 1894.
William died in 1900 (FreeBMD Death Index 1837 - 1915) His widow Ann moved to St Bees and became the Innkeeper at the Oddfellows Arms. In the 1901 Census she was 46 years old. Nellie, Norman and Peter (from previous census reports) are living with her but Mabel (1892, aged 9) and Sam (1896, aged 5) are new children of the household, Mabel and Sam were 8 and 4 respectively when their father died. Hannah Stabb (or Stable?), aged 7, Ann's niece, is living with the family.
By 1911 Ann is living back in Arlecdon, at 51 Parks Road, with Mabel, Sam and Jane Bruce, aged 8, born at Egremont and described as a boarder. Sam, aged 15 is employed as a Fireman/Quarryman, working in a limestone quarry. Ann has no occupation listed but she is now 56.
